A strongly aromatic and widely used plant medicinally, the oil is steam distilled from the leaves. The essential oil of Rosemary was first distilled in the 13 th century. Traditionally viewed as an exhilarating herb, naturally ruled by the Sun (a symbol of vitality and individuality), Rosemary was thought to renew enthusiasm and relieve gloom and despair.

Rosemary had long been considered a symbol of wisdom and love, and fidelity. To the ancient Greek and Romans, the plant was sacred, a symbol of remembrance, loyalty, and death. At weddings and other joyous occasions, garlands and headdresses were worn as an emblem of trust, love, and friendship. At funerals, Rosemary was burnt as incense and placed in the tombs of Pharos.

Rosemary is thought to bring good luck and to impart protection. We find Rosemary in the “Marseilles Vinegar” or “Four Thieves Vinegar” used by bandits to protect themselves during the 15 th century plague. Until recently many French hospitals used Rosemary to disinfect the air.
