From Ananda Aromatherapy, pure organic Blue Yarrow essential oil from Bulgaria. Blue yarrow is used in similar applications to German Blue Chamomile and Blue Tansy ~ as the deep blue color comes from the same anti-inflammatory compound called Chamulzine ~ with stronger antimicrobial and haemostatic effects. Blue Yarrow is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the plant, and has a deeply herbaceous aroma.*

The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the Yarrow plant, with flowers ranging from white, to pink, to yellow in color.

Yarrow essential oil's botanical name belies its historical use and therapeutic effects. "Achillea millefolium" tells us of its use by Achilles, the great Greek warrior, for healing of his wounds, and that of his soldiers. ("Millefolium" notes its finely, feathery leaves). As with other Blue oils, the oil becomes blue in the distillation process, as anti-inflammatory matracin turns to chamulzine.

Its synergy of therapeutic properties make it a first choice for wound healing in the initial stages. Battaglia, in "The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy" lists its among its therapeutic properties: anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic (alleviates or prevents rheumatism), antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, astringent, haemostatic and citrisant" a group of properties which implies it can stop bleeding, speed new skin formation, and reduce inflammation. Quite useful!

And Battaglia notes Yarrow essential oil not only for wounds in skin care, but that it may be used for any irritated skin condition, particularly where its drying properties would be appropriate. You can choose or between, or experiment with Yarrow, German Chamomile, and Blue Tansy to find the best inflammation reducing/soothing oil for your skin's needs. It is regularly noted as a choice in eczema treatment formulations.

Its deep herbaceous aroma is noted for its stress reducing action, and may be helpful for insommnia. Like Blue Tansy, it can also be useful for reducing allergy and hay-fever symptoms.

Yarrow is also noted for its benefits for the digestive system, being used to relieve stomach cramps and gall-bladder pain. As an anti-spasmodic and carminative (an agent preventing the formation of gas in the stomach and the intestinal system), it can be massaged into the abdomen at a relatively high strength in carrier (5-10% for adults, 1-3% for children - though we would recommend mandarin for children's digestive issues)

Uses:

Apply Yarrow essential oil topically. One or two drops may be used "neat" on injured skin, and should be incorporated with a carrier for continuned use - and for long-term use to calm irrated skin.

Yarrow essential oil has been traditionally used to treat wounds, heal irritated skin, and reduce bloating and cramping of the intestinal system.

Cautions:

Always test a small amount first for sensitivity or allergic reaction. Yarrow has no known toxicity.
